Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

Abidii is an app and website for learning Yorùbá. Abidii is responsible for your personal data (the "data controller"). For any privacy question, email us at support@abidii.app

2. What we collect

  • Account: your email, name and profile picture from Google or Apple sign-in (or an anonymous account linked to your device), plus your username, avatar, bio and settings.
  • Learning: the lessons and games you play, your answers, scores, progress, streaks, missions, cowries and reviews, your reminder time, the languages you choose and your level.
  • Device: device model, operating system, app version, time zone and a device identifier, plus a notification token if you allow notifications.
  • Country: the country you connect from, worked out from your internet connection. We don't store your IP address with it, and we don't use precise location.
  • Purchases: your subscription plan, status and dates, as confirmed by Apple or Google. We never see your card details.
  • Handwriting: the letters you trace (see "Handwriting drawings").
  • Messages you send us, for example support emails.

3. Voice recordings

Speaking exercises record your voice on your device so you can compare it with the example audio. The recording stays on your device and is deleted when you replace it or leave the exercise. We don't upload it.

4. Handwriting drawings

When you trace a letter, your drawing is sent to our servers so we can check it. We keep the drawings and results, including any corrections you send, to improve letter recognition.

5. How we use your data

We use your data to:

  • run the app and your account, and save your progress across devices;
  • show leaderboards and run live games;
  • send the notifications you allow;
  • handle your subscription;
  • find and fix problems and improve Abidii, using analytics and crash reports;
  • keep Abidii secure and prevent abuse;
  • help you when signing in or creating an account fails: our team is sent the email address you used, the sign-in method and your device model, so we can fix the problem and contact you;
  • answer your messages.

We rely on providing the service you asked for, our legitimate interests (such as security and improving Abidii), your consent where it's required (such as notifications), and our legal obligations. We don't sell your data or use it for targeted advertising.

6. What other people can see

In live games, the other players in your room see your username, avatar and scores. Leaderboards show your display name, avatar and points. Share images are made on your device and are only shared when you choose to share them. Your display name, avatar and points may also appear in screenshots and videos of the app that we use in app stores, on our website, in ads and on social media. We never show your email or other private details there. If you'd rather not appear, email us (see "Who we are") and we'll leave you out of future material.

7. Analytics, crash reports and cookies

The app uses analytics and crash-reporting services to understand how Abidii is used and to fix problems. Crash reports are set up not to include personal details such as your name or email. Our website always uses cookie-free analytics. It uses Google Analytics, which sets cookies, only if you accept cookies in the banner; you can change your choice any time in "Cookie settings" at the bottom of every page.

8. Notifications

If you allow notifications, we store a notification token so we can send reminders and game invites. You can turn types of notifications off in the app, or turn them all off in your phone's settings.

9. Who we share data with

We use service providers to run Abidii. By category, they are: hosting and databases, content delivery and storage, real-time multiplayer infrastructure, website hosting, analytics, crash reporting, push messaging, email delivery, sign-in (Google and Apple) and app store payments (Apple and Google). They only process data on our instructions. We may also share data when the law requires it.

10. International transfers

We and our service providers may process data in different countries, including the United States. Where needed, these transfers are protected by safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.

11. How long we keep your data

We keep your data while your account is active. When you ask to delete your account, it's deactivated straight away and deleted within 30 days. We may keep some records for longer where the law requires it (such as purchase records), and statistics that no longer identify you. Backups are overwritten on a rolling basis.

12. Children

Families use Abidii together. Children should use Abidii with a parent or guardian, who creates and manages the account. We don't knowingly collect children's data without a parent or guardian being involved.

13. Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, the UK GDPR, Nigeria's Data Protection Act 2023 or California law), you can ask to access, correct, delete or export your data, object to or limit some uses, and withdraw your consent. You can also complain to your data protection authority, such as the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, the UK ICO or your EU authority. To make a request, email us at support@abidii.app

14. Changes to this policy

We'll update this page when our practices change, and show the date at the top. If a change is important, we'll tell you in the app or by email.
